Today I saw Observe and Report staring Seth
Rogen.
This is an Amazing movie but one that's hard to define. Director Jody Hill (The Foot Fist Way, Eastbound and Down) has taken an extremely interesting approach at showing how we as people are flawed and symbolizes that in the form of Ronnie
Barnhardt (Seth
Rogen) he is the head of mall security at the Forest Ridge Mall with dreams of
grandure who at the
beginning of the film is
portrayed as a
bumbling racist
rambler who's jokes we laugh at , at first but the further we get along in the film we learn
Ronnie is bi-polar and his actions maybe more dangerous then we first thought. The
beginning point of the film is that a flasher is attacking the mall in which he is security at, this in turn gives
Ronnie what he believes is his way to make something of himself, especially when the flasher attacks Brandi (Anna
Faris) the boozing, pill popping, make-up counter girl that Ronnie has his eye on. At the same time Detective Harrison (Ray
Liotta) shows up and attempts to take over
Ronnies case , which Ronnie will not let happen, the
interesting point to this relationship is that although he hates Harrison he wants to be him he wants to be the COP that everyone appreciates and respects.
So let me stop before I give to much away in terms of plot and bring to light some other great points of this film. Two words
Aziz Ansari , this guy is amazing even in the maybe 3 scenes he is in as Saddam the lotion Kiosk worker he kills and gives an especially funny line about Chick-
fil-A I would have loved to see more of him in this and hopefully there will be
alot more of him on the
DVD but please someone give this guy his own movie. Another surprise
performance was from Michael Pena as Dennis ,
Ronnie's right hand man. The
interesting thing is this is one of Pena's few comedic roles as hes better known for supporting parts in dramas such as Million Dollar Baby, Crash, and World Trade Center he at first is almost unrecognizable with his curly black hair and lisp but man does it make me wish he did more
comedies. Another great
performance was that of Collete Wolfe as Nell the
Stickey Bun employee that is really the only actual I guess you could say good person in the film, as most of the characters are seriously flawed she is the one character who is there to show there are good people as long as you look around you, I very much enjoyed the onscreen chemistry between Nell and Ronnie.
Word of warning though those who are offended easily this may not be the movie for you as there is a good amount of nudity as well as violence and drugs.Althought for the nudity part what do you expect when a main film point is a flasher?
Overall this film is very, very
different. With some great cameos by Patton
Oswalt and Danny
Mcbride it is highly recommended but please if you go into this movie please
don't go into it thinking that its anything like the mind numbing Paul
Blart that came out earlier this year and keep an open mind about what your seeing it is a very
different movie and in a world filled with remakes, adaptations, and sequels its refreshing to see something new.
I give it a 10/10
